Nutrition (nutritional supplements) and Fluids

In order for you to adapt to your stomach, which has taken a new form with surgery, your dietician will provide a nutrition plan for you in the weeks after the surgery. This consists of a liquid diet for a period of time, followed by soft or pureed foods, and ultimately more regular normal foods. In addition to your daily diet, you will also need a lifelong habit that usually includes:

  • Multivitamin
  • Vitamin D
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Vitamin B12

What vitamin and mineral supplements should I take after weight loss surgery?

A multivitamin containing vitamin D, calcium and in some cases additional iron and / or vitamin B12 supplements are required

How long will I need to take vitamin supplements?

Vitamin and mineral supplements are a lifelong necessity.

How much protein do I need to take daily?

Most patients take 60-80 grams per day, but some may require more depending on the response to the surgery or type of operation.

Can I have all the protein in one meal?

Protein should be eaten at every meal and snacked throughout the day.

Do I need to avoid caffeine after bariatric surgery?

It is a good idea to avoid caffeine for the first thirty days after surgery when your stomach is hypersensitive.

Why is fluid intake important?

Dehydration is the most common reason for postoperative hospitalization. Dehydration occurs when your body doesn’t get enough fluids to function optimally. Water is also necessary for burning stored fat in your body.
